July 2013 Sporting Events and Achievements
Looking back over the month of July 2013, Anguilla has had a busy and successful month in many of their sporting events, some of which we would like to share with you.
Native Anguillian, Shara Proctor, who is a long jump athlete now competing for the UK, continued her consistent season in the IAAF Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland, with a 6.92m jump, just three centimeters short of her 12 month old UK record, ranking her third in Switzerland.
Rechelle Meade attended the World Junior Track and Field Junior Championships between the 10 -14 July in the Ukraine. She competed in the long jump competition, and achieved her best jump to date with 5.44m.
The under 19 cricket team travelled to Antigua to play their last two matches of the Leeward Island Tournament. They competed in two, one day matches against Antigua. The first match was played on Saturday 6 July and they lost 226 to 148 runs.
However, on Sunday 7 July, Anguilla came back with a vengeance and won 128 for 6, against Antigua’s 126 all out. Top scorers were Captain, Asharn Hodge with 64 runs not out and Samil Fleming with 17 runs.
There were many exciting cycling races all leading up to the John T Memorial Race which took place on the 7 July, resulting in a win for Maroni Chevalier of St Martin, with Anguilla’s Sherwin (Shortman) Osbourne gaining 5th place.
Our cyclist took to the roads of St Martin on Sunday 14 July, to participate in the Bastille Day Race.
Although 1st place just eluded them to Dean Hodge of St Martin, Benjamin (Donga) Phillips came in 2nd, Justin (Crazy Legs) Hodge 3rd, Ronnie Bryan 4th and Ricardo (Concho) Romney 5th, all of Anguilla.
Once again the cycling team visited St Martin to participate in the Grand Case Cycling meet on Sunday 21 July. The race was over 100km, with some challenging hills to climb and corners to turn.
Damien Maroni of St Martin won 1st place, 2nd place went to Sherwin (Shortman) Osbourne of Anguilla, 3rd place to Justin (Crazy Legs) Hodge of Anguilla, 4th place to Arthur Kerverne of St Martin and 5th place to Ronnie Bryan of Anguilla.
The Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships took place in Aruba on 27-28 July. Ricardo (Concho) Romney, one of our up and coming cycling athletes, who won this event 2 years ago in Puerto Rico, represented Anguilla. Over 40 riders from about ten countries took part in this event. Ricardo gave his all and achieved 8th place in the road race.
Team Anguilla U-20 football players did the island proud in Tortola during the 14-21 July, in the CFU World Cup qualifying competition.
Although the other teams were more experienced, Team Anguilla played with more passion and determination.
Their first encounter, with BVI, resulted in a win for Anguilla, 2 goals to 0, scored by Tamisha Richardson and Roxanne Bradshaw.
The second match against St Kitts, who were favourite to win, resulted in a win for Anguilla, 2 goals to 1, scored by Tamisha Richardson, with St Kitts scoring the second goal for Anguilla. The final match against Antigua, resulted in a win for Anguilla, with Jamisha Jones scoring the only goal.
On the 23 July, 1 year to go before the Glasgow 2014 Games, celebrations were taking place in the city centre in Glasgow. The day involved a host of fun activities including some lucky competition winners enjoying breakfast al fresco with Sir Chris Hoy, the Glasgow 2014 Ambassador.
