ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Zharnel Hughes
From an early age Zharnel was encouraged to participate in the track and field events, and made his debut as an athlete at the Inter-Primary School Sports Day in 2005.
That same year, Zharnel competed for the Anguilla National Track Team at the Leeward Islands Youth Championships, taking part in meets held in Santo Domingo, Nevis and Tortola.
At the young age of 17 years, Zharnel earned a scholarship to attend the High Performance Training Centre in Jamaica, training with fellow athletes, Olympians, Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 2013
His past and most recent achievements include:
- A gold medal in the 100m sprint, with a 10.52 seconds finish in the CARIFTA Games 2013, held in Nassau, Bahamas, between the 29 March – 1 April 2013.
- Gold in the 200m race, with a 20.82 seconds finish at the BVI Invitational Meet on the 1 June 2013.
- Gold in the 100m sprint, with a 10.52 seconds finish at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational Meet, held in Puerto Rico on the 8 June 2013.
- Another gold medal in the 100m sprint, with a 10.44 seconds finish in the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships held in Colombia between 23 – 25 August 2013.
With 323 days to go, Zharnel continues to train relentlessly towards the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He is having an outstanding year and is improving with each competition he participates in, and we wish him all the success he so deserves.
